On July 27, 2023, the Prime Minister released the 18th installment of the PM-Kisan scheme to more than 8.5 crore farmers. In this tranche, over Rs. 17,000 crore was transferred to the accounts of the eligible farmers. Each beneficiary received Rs. 2,000 directly into their bank accounts.

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) is a Central Sector Scheme designed to provide income support to families of landholding farmers in India. PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Eligibility Criteria
All landholding farmer families are eligible to benefit from the scheme. A landholding farmer family is defined as a family comprising a husband, wife, and minor children owning cultivable land according to the state or UT’s land records. The current land ownership system is utilized to identify beneficiaries.

PM-Kisan Scheme Exclusion Category
Beneficiaries of higher economic status falling under the following categories are ineligible for scheme benefits:
- Institutional landholders.
- Farmer families that include:
- Current and past holders of constitutional posts.
- Present and former Ministers, State Ministers, Chairpersons of District Panchayats, Mayors of Municipal Corporations, Members of Parliament (Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha) and State Legislatures (Legislative Assemblies or Councils).
- Serving and retired employees and officers of Central or State Government Ministries, Offices, Departments, and field units, Central/State Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs), autonomous institutions under the government, and local body employees (excluding Class IV/Multi-Tasking Staff/Group D employees).
- Pensioners with a monthly pension of Rs. 10,000 or above (excluding Class IV/Multi-Tasking Staff/Group D employees).
- Income tax payers in the previous assessment year.
- Professionals such as Engineers, Doctors, Chartered Accountants, Lawyers, and Architects registered with professional bodies and practicing their profession.
PM-Kisan Scheme Benefits
Under the PM Kisan 16th Installment, income support of Rs. 6,000 per year is provided to all landholding farmer families. This support is disbursed in three equal installments annually:

PM-Kisan Aadhaar Link
Farmers must possess an Aadhaar card to avail the scheme’s benefits. Enrollment or registration as a beneficiary under the PM-Kisan scheme is not possible without an Aadhaar card. The installment is released based on the Aadhaar-seeded database.
PM Kisan 16th Installment e-KYC for Farmers
The government mandates e-KYC for farmers registered under the PM-Kisan scheme to receive their installments. Farmers must complete their e-KYC by August 31, 2022, to continue receiving benefits. The e-KYC process can be completed via the PM-Kisan portal or at CSC centers for biometric authentication. The deadline for e-KYC was extended from March 31, 2022, to August 31, 2022.
Steps for e-KYC Completion on PM-Kisan Portal:
- Visit the PM-Kisan portal.
- Navigate to the ‘Farmers Corner’ and select ‘eKYC’.
- Enter the Aadhaar number and click ‘Search’.
- An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number. Enter the OTP and click ‘Submit OTP’.
- The eKYC process will be completed.
PM-Kisan e-Mitra
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has introduced Kisan e-Mitra, an AI-powered chatbot designed to assist farmers with queries related to the PM-Kisan scheme in multiple regional languages. This chatbot offers real-time support by addressing complaints and providing agricultural information. It is accessible in ten languages: Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Odia, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, and English.

PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Credit Card
Launched in 1988, the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme aims to provide farmers with timely access to credit. This initiative has been integrated with the PM-Kisan scheme, allowing beneficiaries to apply for KCC cards and secure short-term loans at low-interest rates.

Application Process under PM-Kisan
Eligible farmers can apply for the PM-Kisan scheme through the following methods:

- Submit the required details to revenue officials, village Patwaris, or other designated officers.
- Common Service Centres (CSCs):
- Register at the nearest CSC for a fee.
- Self-Registration:
- Register on the PM Kisan 16th Installment through the New Farmers Registration option.
Required Details for Registration:
- Personal Information: Name, age, and gender.
- Contact Information: Mobile number.
- Category: SC/ST.
- Identification: Aadhaar number (or Aadhaar Enrollment Number along with other identification documents like Voter ID, Driving License, NREGA Job Card, etc.).
- Bank Account Details: Bank account number of the applicant.
PM-Kisan Online Registration Process
The procedure for online registration under the PM-Kisan scheme is as follows:
- Visit the PM-Kisan portal.

- Scroll down to the ‘Farmers Corner’ and select the ‘New Farmer Registration’ option.

- The ‘New Farmer Registration Form’ page will open, which will verify if the farmer is already registered on the portal.

- For verification, the farmer must choose either the ‘Rural Farmer Registration’ or ‘Urban Farmer Registration’ option. Then, enter the Aadhaar Number, select the state from the drop-down list, enter the captcha, and click on the ‘Search’ button.
- If the farmer’s details are not found in the database, a confirmation message will appear asking if the farmer wants to register. Click on the ‘Yes’ tab.
- The registration form will open, where the farmer needs to enter personal and banking details and then click the ‘Save’ button.
- Follow the instructions displayed on the page to complete the registration process.
PM-Kisan Mobile App Registration
Farmers can also register themselves using the PMKISAN mobile app, which is available for download from the Google Play Store. Alternatively, they can visit the PM-Kisan website on their mobile device and click on the ‘Download PMKISAN Mobile App’ option in the ‘Farmers Corner’ section.

The registration process on the PMKISAN mobile app is as follows:
- Open the PMKISAN mobile app, select the preferred language, and click on the ‘New Farmer Registration’ button.
- Enter the Aadhaar card number, Captcha, and click the ‘Continue’ button.
- Fill out the registration form with details such as name, bank details, address, IFSC code, land details, etc., and click the ‘Submit’ button to complete the registration.
The respective State and UT authorities will identify the beneficiaries, and the farmers’ details will be maintained either manually or electronically. The benefits will be transferred directly to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

Farmers can check the status of their PM-Kisan registration application by following these steps:

PM-Kisan Beneficiary Status
Farmers can view their PM-Kisan status on the official PM-Kisan portal after registration. The names on the PM-Kisan beneficiary list will receive the scheme’s benefits. To check the status:
- Visit the PM-Kisan portal.
- Scroll down to ‘Farmers Corner’ and click on the ‘Beneficiary Status’ button.

- Enter the Aadhaar number, Account number, or Mobile number, and Captcha, then click on the ‘Get Data’ button.
